Does Combine Athleticism Actually Matter for Fantasy Football?

We tested speed, weight, weight-adjusted speed and height against a decade of NFL fantasy production. The answer depends heavily on the position.

It’s the end of February.

The Super Bowl is already becoming a fleeting memory. We’re caught in that sports dead zone between the end of football season and the start of meaningful baseball.

So you flick on the TV and watch the NFL Combine.

A running back blazes a 4.3-second forty. A wide receiver jumps out of the building. A tight end looks like he was built in a laboratory.

And inevitably, the thought creeps in: This guy is going to be a star.

Every year, prospects rise and fall based on what happens at the Combine. Speed gets headlines. Size gets scouts talking. Fantasy managers immediately start imagining what those traits could mean on Sundays.

But how much do they actually matter for fantasy football?

We ran the numbers on NFL running backs, wide receivers and tight ends from 2016–2025, looking at four physical traits: speed, weight, weight-adjusted speed (Speed Score), and height. Then we compared those traits with actual NFL production once players earned meaningful roles.

Do the numbers support what we think we're seeing at the Combine?
The answer is much more complicated than fast = good.

Part I — Running Backs: Speed Really Does Matter

Among team RB1 seasons, raw 40 time had only a modest relationship with average fantasy production. After improving measurement coverage, the relationship with PPR scoring weakened to roughly r = −0.10. That is not evidence that a tenth of a second magically turns an average back into a fantasy star.

But average scoring wasn't where speed told its most interesting story. Faster backs were much more likely to generate explosive rushing plays—and the effect became larger as the definition of “explosive” got more extreme.

The 40-time relationship with 20+ yard rushing rate was r = −0.231 (p=.0002), and with 40+ yard rushing rate it was r = −0.242 (p=.0001). The unique-player sensitivity check told the same story.

That explosiveness also showed up in weekly fantasy ceilings. Faster RBs produced higher maximum weekly scores and more 25+ point performances. In the unique-player test, speed correlated with weekly scoring volatility, maximum PPR score, 90th-percentile score and 25+ point week rate.

Speed Score—the familiar weight-adjusted measure calculated from weight and 40 time—was somewhat more useful for rushing production than weight alone. But it still wasn't a magic fantasy-points formula. In our same-sample RB seasons, Speed Score correlated more clearly with rushing yards per game than PPR PPG.

RB verdict: Speed matters—but mostly because it raises explosive-play and weekly-ceiling potential.
A fast 40 should not override role, volume or talent. It does, however, appear to give an NFL-caliber RB another path to monster plays and monster fantasy weeks.

Part II — Wide Receivers: Fast Creates Big Plays, Not Necessarily Better Fantasy Players

Wide receiver gave us the most counterintuitive result. Speed clearly does what you would expect on an NFL field: faster receivers create more explosive receptions. But that advantage did not translate cleanly into more fantasy points or a higher weekly fantasy ceiling.

The unique-player result was even stronger: r = −0.391 (p=.0001) between 40 time and 40+ yard receptions per 100 catches. The fastest WR quartile produced almost twice as many 40-yard receptions as the slowest group.

Yet when we tested weekly fantasy outcomes, the relationship largely disappeared. WR 40 time did not meaningfully predict maximum PPR score, 90th-percentile score, or the frequency of 20+, 25+ or 30+ point games.

That's an important distinction. Straight-line speed can change how a receiver produces without necessarily changing how much he produces for fantasy. Targets, route participation, target earning, red-zone work, quarterback play and role can overwhelm the advantage of simply being faster.

WR verdict: Speed predicts explosiveness far better than it predicts fantasy success.
A blazing 40 gives a receiver big-play capability. It does not guarantee the volume required to become an elite fantasy WR.

Part III — Tight Ends: Size Is Overrated; Athletic Efficiency Is Real

Tight ends produced a third, distinct answer. After our measurement cleanup, we had verified 40 times for 232 of 287 qualifying TE1 seasons (80.8%), while height and weight coverage was complete.

Raw 40 time came close, but did not quite reach conventional significance for PPR PPG: r = −0.118, p=.073. It did, however, predict receiving efficiency very clearly.

Speed Score was more informative than either size measurement by itself. It correlated with receiving yards per game and yards per target, and had a modest relationship with standard fantasy scoring.

Then came the surprising part: height and weight by themselves told us almost nothing about TE fantasy production. Height vs. PPR PPG was essentially zero, and even height vs. touchdown rate failed to produce a statistically meaningful relationship. Weight was similarly unhelpful for predicting PPR production.

So the stereotypical “big tight end = red-zone fantasy weapon” shortcut isn't supported very well here. Size may matter for playing the position, blocking assignments and earning an NFL role, but once we're looking at established team TE1s, simply being taller or heavier does not appear to separate the better fantasy scorers.

TE verdict: Athleticism matters more than size alone.
Faster, size-adjusted athletes tended to be more efficient receiving threats. Being tall or heavy by itself was a poor fantasy predictor.

So, Does the Combine Matter?

Yes—but probably not in the way we usually talk about it.

For running backs, speed appears to buy something tangible: more explosive runs and a higher fantasy ceiling. For wide receivers, speed strongly predicts long plays but does not reliably predict better fantasy scoring. For tight ends, raw size tells us surprisingly little, while speed—particularly when adjusted for weight—has a clearer relationship with receiving efficiency.

The mistake is treating athletic testing as destiny. The Combine measures physical tools. Fantasy football measures what happens when those tools collide with opportunity, role, skill, scheme and volume.

The practical takeaway: Use athletic testing as a modifier, not a projection system. A fast RB may deserve an upside bump. A fast WR deserves respect as an explosive threat, but still needs targets. And for TEs, we'd rather see functional speed than simply chase height and weight.

Methodology

EdgeLine examined regular-season player production from 2016–2025. Positional cohorts were built around players who earned meaningful team roles, including team RB1/WR1 samples and team TE1 seasons. Physical measurements were matched to available combine, roster and verified workout data. Speed Score was calculated as 200 × weight ÷ 40-yard-dash time⁴. Relationships were evaluated using both Pearson correlation (linear relationship) and Spearman correlation (whether higher/lower rankings generally move together). We also ran unique-player sensitivity checks so multi-year stars could not dominate the results simply by appearing in multiple seasons.

Correlation does not prove causation. Athletic testing can influence whether a player earns an NFL opportunity in the first place, meaning an analysis of established NFL contributors is necessarily a selected population. Missing 40 times also remain for legitimate non-runners and players without verified measurements; those values were left missing rather than estimated.
